In 1984, Joe Bunn was a young aspiring DJ who spent time working with a local seasoned DJ. When he decided it was time to retire, he offered his business to Joe to take over, and that’s when Bunn DJ Company was born.
Joe then DJ’d through high school in Wilson and college at UNC. After graduating, he DJ’d on the weekends at clubs in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, and Wilmington all while still holding down a day job. In the late 90’s, he started DJ’ing weddings and by 2000 he was getting calls from brides looking to book him on the same days. Since he could only work one wedding at a time, he went out and found other DJs to work for him. Now there are over 30 DJs in 5 offices (Raleigh, Charleston, Charlotte, Richmond, and San Diego) and they DJ more than 1,000 events per year.
When asked what makes them stand out, they said, “We like to tell clients that we are fun but classy. We love all types of music, love our jobs and love watching people have the night of their live. We do not try to steal the spotlight.” They also said that clients should know they can create a music “Must Play” list and maybe more importantly, a “Do Not Play Ever” list to make sure their wedding reception is the party of their dreams.
Joe’s newest venture has been to create The DJ’s Vault. He said that he talked to so many young DJs about where they learned how to DJ and they all said “YouTube.” But, that was only the technical side, not the business side. He realized that there is no place for them to go to learn the business side of things. Since he has been in business for 35 years, and has made such a great career out of it, he decided share his knowledge.
